Paper Stock and Weight
When it comes to dictionary printing, choosing the right paper stock and weight is crucial to ensure a high-quality and durable product. At Prime Printings, we understand the importance of selecting the right materials to meet your specific requirements. Here are some common paper stock options and weights that are commonly used for dictionary printing.
Offset paper
Offset paper is a cost-effective choice for normal dictionary printing. It is known for its high opacity, which prevents text from showing through the pages. Offset paper is also easy to write on, making it suitable for dictionaries that require notes or annotations. The weight of offset paper used for dictionary printing typically ranges from 60gsm to 100gsm.
Coated paper
Coated paper is a popular choice for cover or chlidren's dictionary printing due to its smooth and shiny finish. It enhances the appearance of text and images, making them more vibrant and eye-catching. Coated paper is also resistant to smudging and fingerprints, ensuring that your dictionary remains clean and professional-looking even with frequent use. The weight of coated paper used for dictionary printing ranges from 105gsm to 157gsm.

Dictionary Size
The size of a dictionary plays a significant role in its usability and portability. At Prime Printings, we offer a range of standard sizes for dictionary printing, as well as the option for custom sizes to meet your specific needs. Here are some common sizes for dictionaries:
Pocket Size: Pocket-sized dictionaries are compact and convenient to carry around. They typically measure around 4.13 x 6.75 inches or 3.5 x 5.5 inches, making them perfect for travelers or individuals who need quick access to definitions on the go.
Standard Size: Standard-sized dictionaries are larger and provide more space for detailed definitions and additional information. They usually measure around 5.38 x 8.52 inches or 6 x 9 inches. Standard-sized dictionaries are commonly used in educational settings or for general reference.
Large size: Large-sized dictionaries are ideal for comprehensive reference purposes. They offer ample space for extensive definitions, illustrations, and other supplementary materials. The dimensions of large-sized dictionaries can vary, but they typically measure around 8.25 x 10.25 inches or 8.25 x 11 inches, such as children's dictionary.
Binding Methods
The binding method used for dictionary printing is an essential consideration to ensure durability and longevity. At Prime Printings, we offer two common binding options for dictionaries: sew perfect bound and sew hardcover.
Sew perfect binding
Sew perfect binding is a popular choice for dictionaries due to its strength and flexibility. It involves sewing the individual pages together before attaching them to the cover. This method allows for easy page-turning and ensures that the dictionary can withstand frequent use without pages falling out. Sew perfect bound dictionaries lay flat when opened, allowing for convenient reading and referencing.
Sew Hardcover
Sew hardcover binding provides additional protection and durability to a dictionary. It involves sewing the pages together and then attaching them to a hardcover using glue and reinforced end papers. Sew hardcover dictionaries are known for their sturdiness and ability to withstand heavy use. The hardcover also adds a professional and premium touch to the overall appearance of the dictionary.
Artwork Tips
The artwork design of your custom dictionary plays a crucial role in capturing attention and creating a memorable reading experience. Here are some tips to consider when designing artwork for your dictionary:
Correct size: Make sure your file is in the correct size before sending it to dictionary printing company.
Image resolution: all images used in your dictionary design must be saved out at 300dpi for the highest quality printed result.
Color format: Your file must be saved out in CMYK color format to ensure print correctly.
Bleed: If you have any artwork that runs to the edge of paper, you need to set up a 0.125 inches bleed to all four sides of your artwork.
Outlined fonts: Outline your fonts in Illustrator or Photoshop, and do the same in Indesign or package your Indesign file to send over.
File types: Usually, we prefer PDF file, but also accept Illustrator or Photoshop and Indesign files.
